The Web Site Promotion Guide

Often it is hard for newcomers to the web site business to know how to get the rest of the world to know they exist. Before you even worry about traffic, make sure you have a great site to show people or they may come once and not want to come back again.

A great site means you have:

  • Great content
  • Easy to navigate
  • Easy on the eyes
  • Loads fairly quickly
  • Meets the W3C standards
  • Has proper meta tags in place
  • Is void of keyword spamming or hidden text
  • Is void of any tricks to both visitors and web spiders

If you have followed these guidelines, then you are ready to promote it. One of the best ways to start is on your web pages themselves. Include a bit of javascript so they can bookmark the page. Another good trick is to make use of your cgi-bin and have things like refer a friend or even an free for all link page or a greeting card page where your visitors will participate and send out invitations to others to visit your site without spam accusations against you.

All though most people don't realize it, there are really only 3 major places to list your site. If you are in those 3 places, every other search engine and directory will most likely pick you up eventually. Those sites to submit are Google, Yahoo! and DMOZ. If you are in there, you are everywhere.
