A slip of the keyboard and you can add or take away parts of the script that could crash someone's browser or make it take forever to load or just plain not work. For this reason it is crucial you learn at least the basics about putting together the scripts.
This can easily be done by reading such books as, Java Script: Comprehensive, Java Script : Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Weaving a Website : Programming in HTML, Java Script, PERL and Java.Or you can play around with the scripts available for free public use at:
When you borrow a script from another source, be sure it is compatible with the doctype format you are using. If it isn't, you may have to make some manual adjustments.

If it takes too long to load the page, most will not stick around to see what you had to offer. If their browser crashes, not only will they not see what you had to offer, they probably won't want to come back again.
Don't use javascripts because you can. Only use it if it actually enhances your site. Overkill can kill your site!
