The benefit of most online classified ad sites is they are free. Free does not always mean worthless, but it does mean most will probably not see your ad, except for search engine spiders which is what you want.
Unlike FFA links which roll off quickly, classified ads tend to stay up for a month or longer before rolling off which allows time for a search engine spider to see it. If your ad contains a link to your site, it will be just another boost to your Page Rank. Just be sure to renew the ad in a timely manner to keep the link up.
If you want to be seen by those who do visit the ad sites, consider spending the money for the prize positions. They are not that expensive and do get a lot of traffic, so your ad will be seen. Just make sure you place your ad in an appropriate section. If you have a business opportunity, place it in a business related section. If you are selling computer parts, place it in an electronics or computer section.

Think of an attention grabbing headline which will stop the other surfers to pay attention to what you have to say next. Make the body of the ad short and sweet. Mention what's in it for the surfer, create a need of urgency to click the link now, and direct them to a page that will sell them on whatever you offer.
The purpose of your classified ad is to get them to a sales page or offer. Don't try to tell them everything in the ad as the surfer will move on quickly. If they are curious and interested, they will click.
