What DMOZ Looks For In A Web Site

DMOZ is a human run directory and not a search engine. Each category is run by an editor who decides if your web page submitted is appropriate for that topic. As this is run by humans, there are certain rules you must know.

DMOZ is short handed. The editors are basically all volunteers. As such, they cannot immediately classify all submitted sites. They cannot personally comment one way or another about the status of your site. They can, however, take offense if you are abusive towards them and not list you at all.

To get listed at DMOZ, go to DMOZ.com on the main page. Look for the appropriate category where you think your site should go. Then look for the appropriate subcategory until you find the right spot. Look for the link on that page that asks you to Submit To Editor. Make sure you are not already listed before you submit! Click on that link and follow the directions exactly. DO NOT USE ALL CAPS!! They also frown on excessive promotional titles such as "The Greatest Site" or "Best In The World". Stick with a neutral title and description that explains what your site is about and you are more than likely to be listed.

Once you fill out the information, it could take days, weeks, or even months before you are listed. If it is longer than 6 months since you submitted either your original information has been misplaced, there was no editor working that section, or you have been rejected. Try the process again after 6 months. Make sure you have followed all the rules and you are being polite. Make sure your page is actually about what you say it is as this is the number one reason why a site is rejected. For instance, if you claim your site is on health care but all your page speaks about is a sales pitch to buy insurance - you will be rejected. If that were the case, an appropriate fix would be to write articles about the state of health care where your insurance pitch is weaved into the information on health care.

Why do you want to go through hoops to get listed on DMOZ? Because DMOZ is all about the content! A site listed here means it is a quality site and likely to be picked up by others looking for quality link exchanges. The higher quality exchange links you have, the better your Google rank.
